IT Updates – October 2025
Windows 10 End of Support
- Windows 10 is no longer supported. Starting in November, any devices running Windows 10 that are capable of running Windows 11 and don’t have an approved exception will be placed in a restricted network and be unable to access university resources until they upgrade to Windows 11.
- If you’re running Windows 10 and able to upgrade to Win 11, do so as soon as possible.
- If you have a valid reason for not upgrading to Windows 11, contact help@sciences.ncsu.edu to request an exception and be prepared to provide the COS Asset Tag, Serial Number or Service Tag, and Computer hostname.
- Information must be provided to us before 8AM this Thursday 10/30 so we can review and submit to OIT on your behalf.
Turning off Text Messaging for DUO 11/5
- On Nov. 5, OIT will disable Text Messaging as a Duo authentication method. All users will have to use the Duo Mobile app or security key.
MacOS 26 Tahoe
- We’ve completed testing of MacOS 26 Tahoe and users are encouraged to upgrade.
- Ensure you have a current backup of all critical data first.
- To adhere to university policy, you must run the most current MacOS release or up to 2 versions back.
- Current supported systems are:
- Tahoe [MacOS 26], Sequoia [MacOS 15], Sonoma [MacOS 14]

GitHub Enterprise Cloud
- The on-prem GitHub service is being retired in favor of GitHub Enterprise Cloud service. Users need to migrate their data to the Cloud service by Dec 20.

Free Zoom Webinar and Large Meeting Licenses
- Permanent employees now have access to Webinar 500 and Large Meeting 500 and there is no longer a need to borrow or purchase these licenses.
- Departments using generic accounts with a Large Meeting 500 license or Webinar 500 license will still be charged.
- Employees now also have Translated Captions and Zoom Scheduler.
Recent Phishing Attacks
- There have been several recent widespread and successful phishing attacks across campus. If you suspect you’re being phished, don’t click on any links or forward the message. In Gmail, click the vertical ellipses and select “Report phishing” to report the incident to university Security and Compliance. If you’re using a 3rd party mail client, you can disable automatic downloads so that malicious files are not downloaded to your computer by default.
